Jews of the Caribbean

Tuesday, December 10, 2019 12 Kislev 5780

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Professor Naomi Daremblum joins us for an engaging lecture to trace the origins of Sephardic Jewish communities in the Caribbean from the Spanish expulsion of 1492 to the present. She will discuss how Jewish identity has evolved and adapted to changing circumstances in the New World, and will examine nineteenth and twentieth century Jewish migration to Latin America for those escaping European persecution.

Originally from Costa Rica, Professor Daremblum has a PhD and specializes in Latin American culture, art and politics. She currently teaches at Montgomery College, and has previously held teaching appointments at NYU and The New School. She is a published author and has taught and written on a wide range of subjects, from the Jews of Brazil to the rise of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela.
