The Cairo Genizah-An Online event
Tuesday, November 16, 2021 • 12 Kislev 5782
7:00 PM - 8:00 PMMDSC member Harry Abadi will discuss the “Cairo Genizah,” in an online presentation on Tuesday, November 16 at 7:00 pm. The Cairo Genizah is a depository of medieval Jewish manuscripts found in the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Fustat (Old Cairo), Egypt. The documents provide a fascinating insight into the daily life of Medieval Jewish communities in the Middle East and beyond, and are a major source of primary historical material for the history of this period. Recent digitization efforts have now, for the first time, brought together these documents that are currently scattered around the globe in about 75 different private and public collections. Harry will review the history and importance of some of the collections, and share example images from this fascinating, and sometimes moving, material
